Get on the brain train...!

When returning from summer holidays a few weeks back, one thing struck me. The neuroscience ‘’Brain-Train’’ has finally, properly, entered the region. It seems to have caught the interest of both business and HR people alike. LinkedIn, facebook, workshops, local media… It is everywhere!

This is great news! Being a neuroscience junkie with a personal and professional aim to introduce neuroscience into everything I do related to HR and organisation change, I love the fact that the debate is about to kick off properly in the region.

Having joined the academic circles of neuroscience earlier this year, I’ve come to the conclusion that there is only one thing we know for certain:

We know a lot about the brain, but there is still a lot more to learn.

New research is coming out all the time and it is very difficult to know what is right and what is wrong. This is a challenge, as there is a lot of what my professor calls ‘’brain-bollocks’’ out there. I.e. what you hear sounds great, it makes references to the brain, makes you feel good, but a lot of it is either so simplified that it no longer makes sense, or it is simply wrong. Of course, sometimes it is also correct, or at least it can be backed up by some scientific evidence. The challenge is to know what is right and what is wrong, and how it can be applied in real life and at work. That can be hard – even if you do a lot of research on the topic. Personally, I believe the link between academia and business needs to become much stronger to ensure the topic can be researched and applied better within organisations.
