flow²thrive Newsletter: March

Written by Linda Jarnhamn, Founder & Managing Director

This month we’ve dedicated our newsletter to the topic of Autonomic Balance.

I vividly remember the first time I heard about the concept during a lecture in applied neuroscience back in 2017.

‘‘THIS EXPLAINS EVERYTHING!!!’’

I wrote in large letters all over my notebook. Well, maybe it doesn’t explain everything, but I suddenly saw why things don’t work they way we’d like them to in most organisations.

I now strongly believe this is the ‘‘new engagement’’.

My dream is that all leaders will start using autonomic balance as a measure to better understand, capture and act on their organisation's overall people risks and performance potential in the very near future.

That they swap their existing engagement surveys for surveys and tools that can track autonomic balance and the factors that can directly impact the collective autonomic balance of a group (= collective performance potential).

In short, what is Autonomic Balance?

Autonomic balance refers to the state of equilibrium between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which are part of the autonomic nervous system.

This balance is essential for maintaining both physical, mental wellbeing and cognitive performance.

Academic research and practical lived experience have now both proven that a balanced autonomic nervous system is crucial for optimal cognitive performance.

We’re therefore very excited to have Justin Buckthorp as our latest guest on the Sustainable Human Podcast.

In this third episode, we dig deep into the topic of autonomic balance and HRV as a measure of human sustainability and explore topics and questions such as:

  • The mental health ''20/80'' or ''above and below the neck'' rule

  • Employee engagement vs autonomic balance

  • HRV as a measure of employee risk and potential

The future of work is HumAIn. It's time for a work re-set.

We’ve also attended few sessions this past month on the topic of AI and it’s impact on our ways of working. More on this in the months to come, but here is a first blog on the topic

What’s cooking in March?

  • We’ll be in London for:

    • The World Happiness Summit, 19 - 20 March

    • The Business Innovation Summit: Harnessing AI, 21 March

  • Let us know if you’re at either of the events and would like to meet up.

  • From India to New York, we’re kicking off a number of projects for clients using the flow²thrive Human Sustainability Index, which we’re really excited about.

  • We’ll be running a virtual session for a client in the Middle East on the topic of ‘‘Inspiring Inclusion through physiological resilience’’ for International Women’s Day

That’s it for this month!

Best,

Linda, Founder & Managing Director
